Running resources on the web
Below is a list of resources on the web, grouped usefully (I hope). Bear in mind that I’ve looked at every one of these sites and only included ones I think warrant entry. There are lots more out there: some are horrible to navigate, some have lots of advertising and little substance, and many I don’t know about.
-
Physiology, injury, sports science, etc
Websites to help us understand all the weird stuff that goes on in our bodies.-
Local runner/writer Kate Percy writes about nutrition and good food.
-
A very good blog on all things physiological on the New York Times website.
-
Lots of calculators, tables, predictors etc. Quick and tidy.
-
A simple but effective summary of injuries and training tips. No adverts :)
-
Very comprehensive and easy to navigate collection of information for the detail hungry.
-
Full of diagrams, explanations for why it hurts, and treatment techniques. Adverts galore!
-
-
GPS, mapping, stats etc
-
Bristol Running Resource's very own favourite running locations.
-
A popular Google-based platform for measuring and saving running routes with a pretty user friendly interface.
-
Garmin's site for uploading, managing, and viewing data from your GPS device. Here's one example of what you can do that I created: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/player/6634798
-
A new and slightly quirky site that may gain popularity. Upload your runs and see yourself race against others.
-
A good mapping and route finding service with additional data on routes.
-
-
Governing bodies and organisations
Resources for runners from around the webernet-
Competition for old people (over 35).
-
Supporting and developing athletics in the South West Region.
-
Lots of links - including webcams of wet, windy places.
-
This is a "local" club event for the more seriously (and very seriously) minded.
-
Home of UK Athletics' new magazine, this looks like a reasonable attempt to jazz up track and field with drama, passion, and good looking young athletes.
-
All the info about everything GB in the Olympics.
-
Governing body and source of information for track and field.
-
-
All encompassing sites
Sites that pull together everything running related, but normally with a national bias and not as good as this site!-
Pretty comprehensive. Too much advertising.
-
Not really all encompassing, but a pretty easy to use race (and other sports event) finder for Europe. Not great for Bristol!
-
Latest news from Auntie.
-
Very comprehensive and pretty unique, including running logs, discussion forums, training planners, race reviews, club information, blogs, race diary, and more.
-
Set up to get more people active between now and the olympics. Running, walking, swimming and more. Good interactive training plans for new and moderate runners.
-
A pretty pleasant environment for browsing all things running.
-
Top of Google and a big old website full of resources for runners, including lots of races to search for and enter. Bit of a dogs dinner though, I think. And to take full advantage you have to subscribe to their magazine.
-
-
Running holidays
Commercial organisations offering coaching and running holidays.-
Organise transport, accommodation and transfers for races around the world.
-
-
Stuff I can't classify!
Here are other sites I think really deserve to be in here, but I just can't work out where else to put them. Doesn't mean they're no good though - could mean they are even more special.-
A message well worth driving home. Bristol isn't all traffic jams and sirens.
