Street athletics for teenagers - ffs!

Just going to plug what sounds like a great event and have a moan.

By pure chance I was asked today to post a link to an event happening in Bristol soon. It sounds really good. But as I said, I only heard by chance, despite scouring the web for local races on a monthly basis.

Now, indulge me: Go to the site, go on, take your time. If you can explain what these events are about (you know, simple stuff, like how far you might be running) after 3 minutes you’re a damn site brighter than I am. I hope you at least found out that the Bristol event exists, and when.

Jeeez, WHAT IS IT WITH RUNNING? Maybe I’m as bad, but if you want to see a poor website, you’d find one pretty quick by Googling “running events”. NO WONDER BRITISH COMPETITIVE RUNNING ISN’T WHAT IT WAS. (Even the link to the web design agency takes people off the site. Now I’m a poor designer, but I wouldn’t do that. Oh, and the Facebook links take me to my own profile - useful.)

Well, I happen to know that these are 60m races for under 13, 15, 17 & 20’s male and female. ‘No equipment, spikes or club membership required’. Thanks to the man from the council who has enlightened me.

With Linford Christie, Darren Campbell & Christian Malcolm. If I had a teenager into running I’d be down there like a shot. I only hope everyone knows about it. I might even take my sub-teenage kids along to watch.

Maybe I’m missing something. Maybe all the people who need to know are fed information by some special secret route. Maybe I spend too much of my time running, Tweeting and larking about on the web to realise what’s going on in my own back yard. maybe all the schools have been plugging it to their kids and anyone who comes to the site will not really need to bother because they have all the info.

So, let me make it plain: If you are a teenager who loves to run, get your bum down to the City Academy and see if you can qualify to be one of 24 Bristol runners who will go to compete in the Grand Final in Manchester.

I gave up trying to work out when that will be. But I’m sure it will be worth it.

PS. Using capitals in written communication is poor practice - it can seem like you are shouting at the reader.

Oh, and please feel free to comment on this post.
