Nike Zoom Waffle XC VII

Nime Zoom Waffle XC VIINike Zoom Waffle XC VIIWhat a mouthful. Since I’m getting into regular interval sessions on the grass at Coombe Dingle and doing the BMC Mike Sully Mob Match tomorrow, I thought now was the time to invest in my first pair of spikes.

It’s difficult when you get the first of anything, because you don’t really know what you want. Anyway, I went to Easy Runner, because it’s the nearest shop to my house, and it was p***ing with rain, in case you hadn’t noticed.

They were kind enough to let my 6yr old boy try the treadmill while I tried on the Nikes and some Brookes. First new thing was getting my head round the increased snugness of these shoes. I just looked on the Nike website and they say “go down 1.5 sizes” - well I went up 1, and I’m still a bit worried about tightness. But the Brookes seemed to let my toes slop out over the side of the sole, so I went for the Nikes. My daughter thought they looked cooler too, so there’s an added bonus.

So, its all systems go for a satisfying quarter of an hour of misery in the mud tomorrow - but no slipping over. I’m looking forward to running in something firm and positive, instead of spongy things - I think…

About time too.

It has been about a week since my last blog, I did plan to do a couple over the week but finding the time was difficult. But hey these things are sent to try us.

My week hasn’t been that bad, I am still running for one thing, beginning to sort my breathing out properly, getting some (not enough though) mileage in and of course managing to compete in a couple of races.

Sine the Speed Training blog made last week I carried on with my training on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of that week, I got in 20 miles, still trying to build up a good training base. I had a rest day on Saturday ready for the South West Cross Country Relays, held at Kings College in Taunton. It is a good event but could do with a bit more advertisement and support from running clubs in the South West, please look out for this event next year. Well I was part of the B&W B team taking the 2nd leg, I was put in a strange position in leading the 2nd league, but just after the half way point of lap one, my fellow team mate andA team member passed me. I went round the 2 lap 2 mile course in a time of 10:24, positive time considering I still haven’t raced full cross country event for 2 years and even then I have only raced in 2 senior events.

I had a rest day on Monday ready for the Bridge Inn 5k on Tuesday, I wanted to use this race to get me back in the swing of running road races again, I have to say I enjoyed it especially when I finished and realised that I had broken the 17 minute barrier, better than I hoped for andeven better that I wanted to race but not to my normal level of effort. Which meant that I could follow up the race with a few more miles. I came home 8th place in a time of 16:57. Out of 12 5k event I have run this year I have only gone over the 17 minute mark twice, some improvement form the year before.

I managed 4 miles yesterday and then tried a new route today which was 9.5 miles in length through the Blaise estate and surrounding area. I am planning on a good session of hill climbs and 2 longish runs over the next couple of days, then it will be somke slight tapering ready for the Sodbury Slog on the 8th

Speed Training

Its Tuesday again and yes that means squad training, I am now looking forward to these sessions now my fitness is getting back to where it was before the Bristol Half Marathon. Tonight’s variation of the 30 minute session was:

  • 2 x 6 min followed by 2 min recovery
  • 3 x 4 mins followed by 1 1/2 mins recovery
  • 3 x 2 minutes followed by 1 min recovery

Again, I am very positive of my efforts tonight felt strong all the way through, not bad considering I haven’t had a rest day since before the Mini Muggles. With a 6.5 mile run on Sunday and a 6 mile run yesterday.

Tomorrow is a rest day. Thursday and Friday will both be training days ready for the South West Cross Country Relays on Sunday.
