What a tragedy for the Bristol boy!

Letsrun.com has been celebrating this week the 30th anniversary of US star Craig Virgin’s first win in the World Cross Country Championships.  But it’s a noteworthy anniversary for Bristol too as the city’s greatest ever runner, Nick Rose, took the bronze medal.

It was an agonising finish, so he might not want to be reminded of it, but what a runner!  Still British record holder for a road 10k (27:34), 5th fastest ever British man for 10,000m (27:31), and 2nd fastest ever for a Half Marathon (61:03).  Not to mention a 16:17 for 3rd place in the Bridge Inn 5k at the age of 57!

If you want to know more about him, this is an interesting interview and there is an interesting article here on the 1980 race, and Craig Virgin

I like the way the camera jiggles up and down - the gritty, "as if you are running alongside" style of camera work so difficult to replicate these days.

Another very interesting article, thanks Steve. Always remember Nick Rose being featured on HTV news with Uncle Bruce Hockin and young Richard Wyatt when I were a lad, but nostalgiafest aside, Nick was always an inspiration to the likes of me and I'm sure many others, respect! It's great to see him still around. If you are reading this Nick, Brian Crumpton says hello!
