It’s been two weeks since I was last able to run. I tried a five minute jog on the treadmill on Thursday and my foot still hurt, and it is still hurting sometimes when I walk, so I booked myself in for some physio and went tonight.
The verdict is that the half marathon is not out of the question, I might be able to get this sorted in time and if I keep working on my fitness I should be ok to do it. My right foot apparently pronates (rolls inwards) a bit, which is probably what has caused the pain in the ball of my foot - I need to do some exercises twice a day to try and see if I can correct it. I need to buy a ‘toe spacer’ - which I’m yet to work out exactly what it is - to keep my big toe away from toe number two, and work on correcting my foot position, which is a bit weird. But physio Gill reckons it could work.
As for running, in a couple of days I’ll give it another go and see if it is any better. I’ll go back to se Gill next week and go from there. As for the cause of the pronation - it’s probably a combination of things. 1) people just get it, it happens. 2) the running and increased training has made it more apparent. 3) my accident, subsequent injuries and crutch use probably didn’t help a lot, and could have sparked it in the first place. SO…. exercises, continued fitness and running attempts are on the menu, but the clock is ticking until September 6.
It’s very frustrating as this will almost certainly mean I am just doing the half marathon to get round it, not to get round in a good time. It’s also frustrating because my plan was to do the half and then ease off the running a lot, do other sports, because in the long run, running probably isn’t going to be my best option considering my injuries. But I did really want to prove to myself that this would be possible. grrrr
