Discussion > Bath Half Organisation

I always predict a dreadfully organised bath half, and this seems to be borne out by Simon Peevers: http://fatboybristol.blogspot.com/2010/03/bath-half-marathon-2010-great-run-shame.html. But StillAwake makes no mention of it: http://mcquinny.wordpress.com/2010/03/08/beating-the-bath-half-marathon/.

How was it for you?

I had a good race and beat my Bristol time by 20 minutes, but I have few complaints:

1) It was very crowded on the way round, although the 2nd lap was better, but I did feel claustrophobic on the finishing mile due to the sheer number of spectators standing in the road.

2) To me the runner's village was just a muddy field and I hate to think what it would have been like if the weather had been worse. Getting to the start was a nightmare and took us nearly 30 minutes to get to the gate.

3) The finish organisation was well disorganised. Too many people in too smaller area. People getting cold and not moving.

4) The goody bag was rubbish, with only one small snack that you could eat after the race.

So some recommendations:

1) Two start times (30 mins in between), so that less people have to make there way to the start at any one time.

2) Maybe split the runner's village up and use the Orange Grove for meeting up.

3) Use Henrietta Street to hand out drinks, de-chip, get your foil wraps and goody bags and have a few more marshals at the point.

4) If you going to have a one-way system in the village, enforce it!

5) Keep the crowds back more.

A plus point to finish though. It was a great atmosphere and I enjoyed the band at Queens square!
I agree that the organisation was not great - especially having people stood in massive queues at the end of the race getting cold and stiff without having the space for an appropriate cool-down

I did consider having a moan about the organisation on my blog (mentioned above) but decided - screw that - I wanted to focus on the great course and sense of achievement at the end of it, and not have my experience ruined by the poor organisation. I'll leave my comments on that subject for their feedback survey :)
